Painted Acorns | Tutorial

Hi there!

Laura here today with another off the page tutorial, I hope you are not getting tired of them!  I am just having so much fun creating a variety of things, and I can't help myself!

My youngest son and I collected a  bunch of acorns while on a walk the other day, and I turned them into a fall home decor item.

Don't they just inspire you?

I will admit, I did totally gross myself out with these beauties!  After collecting them, I put the bin into my craft room to play with later on, that night while I was blogging I heard something moving - turns out a couple of the acorns had larvae inside them - ewwww!

I put the whole bucket outside immediately!  Of course, my comedy of errors couldn't stop there, no sooner were the acorns outside than a fat squirrel was casing my yard! Ha!

Anyway, apparently the rule is you have to bake the acorns to ensure all the wildlife is out of them.

Pop them onto a baking tray, covered in foil, and bake at 170C for about 3 hours.  You may want to set an alarm,  if you are anything like me out of site is out of mind!

After that you just need to gather some paints and a paint brush.  I started with grey, rust, oatmeal, green and blue paints.  I mixed the colours together to create a variety of shades in each colour group. My living room is oatmeal, grey and green - so that was my jumping off point.

It helps with drying if the acorns will stand on their little hats, like the two on the right of the photo above.  By the way, if the hats pop off in the baking process you can use hot clue or ZipDry to glue them back on.  They are easier to paint with the hats on, as you have something to hang on to.

I had a few that didn't stand up so I propped them on top of lids from bottles of Mr. Huey's mist, they were just the right size.

After the paint was dry, I "painted" a few of the lighter colour acorns with Heidi Swapp Color Shine in gold.  It is my favourite gold mist, because it actually looks gold when it is dry.  I just added a light coat with a paint brush.

Doesn't this just say fall?

So glad you visited today!  I promise to try to bring you something papercraft-y for next week!

October Colour Challenge and Septembers winner!

Hi there!

We have a new colour challenge for you, but first let's pick a winner for our September 2015 challenge!  Using random.org to draw a winner.....

... which means, 10. Tones scrapperom: Beachtime is our winner!  Congratulations, please email us at scrapmuch@rogers.com to claim your prize, and don't forget to grab your winner badge from our left hand side bar!

Now here is a look at our  October colour line up.....

This fabulous colour board is from Design Seeds.    The photos are for colour inspiration only, this is not intended as a mood board.

To play along, all you have to do is create a new paper crafted project, of any type, that uses at least 3 of the colours from the colour board and post it on your blog or any other online forum  (ie. your Flickr Account) that you can link us up to, by our deadline.  Then link it using the Inlinkz tool in our sidebar.

Please share the challenge colours on your blog (just copy and paste them) and show a link back to this site to encourage your readers to play along, as well.  You can link up your projects here for about 3 weeks following the challenge.

One lucky participant, drawn randomly, will be winning a prize!! It doesn't get much better than that!  Everyone is welcome to play, though there may be some shipping charges to our international winners.

Sketch-y Friday with Team A | October 2, 2015

Hello friends!

We are starting a brand new month of challenges today, with a fun double page sketch for you!  But first let's pick a winner for our September challenges!

Which means 11. Kim's Scrapbook Addiction: Say Cheese... is our winner!  Congratulations Kim, please email us at scrapmuch@rogers.com to claim your prize - and don't forget to grab your winner badge from our sidebar and display it proudly on your blog!

And now for this weeks sketch:

And here is your Team A DT inspiration!

Here is a run down of our Sketch-y Friday rules.  Just link up your creations in our sidebar to be entered into a random draw for our monthly prize.    You have until October 29th, at midnight to participate in any of this month's sketch challenges, each linkup tool will remain open until that date!  You may take some artistic license with your adaptation of the sketches, however if you choose to use a double page sketch for a single page layout you may only enter once per sketch, not once per side.

If you are playing along with more than one challenge you will need to link each of them up via a separate blog post for the link up tool to work. (International participants may be required to pay some shipping fees.)  Good luck, we cannot wait to see what you create!

*note - If you are playing along using Flickr the team will no longer be leaving comments, due to changes in Flickr policies and passwords.  However, we will be checking out your entries for sure and you are definitely eligible for the prize draw. Our apologies for any inconvenience this may cause.

Laura's Monthly Reveal | Something Wicked | My Mind's Eye

Hello there and Happy October!

Laura here, sharing my monthly reveal with you, as you would think I got to play with some super fun Halloween goodies! I am just loving this "Something Wicked" collection by My Mind's Eye!  Have a look at what I got:

This paper pack is just the right size with 6 double sided papers, some are even glittery!  It also includes a glittery alpha set, which is super sticky and a fun stickers sheet!

This set of pin back flair is super cool, I am loving that this is the perfect collection for kids and adults of all ages that enjoy Halloween fun!

I also received two Tim Holtz products and I know you are going to want to get your hands on these!

This stencil was too fun to play with!

And these skull embellishments are super wicked!

SPOOKTACULAR FUN

I started out creating this two page layout, because I loved this orange paper with the dolled up skull! I tied my two sides together by having an orange paper on the right side of page one, so that the colours flow nicely across to page two.  I also used the glittered stripe paper and the paper with skulls with orange glasses on both sides of the layout to also help tie the pages together.

As you can see I played with the stencil on the background on both sides and followed up with some orange Glimmerglaze sprinkled around.

After that I added my title and a bit of embellishing.  I added a button, twine and thread from my stash to complete the layout.  I wanted a little something to help the button stand out a bit while shuffling things around on my desk trying to decide what to use, I noticed that the sticker sheet has a lot of negative space, so I grabbed a punch and got busy!

The sticker sheet has a great texture, almost linen -ish, so that adds a bit to my page as well.

 ZOMBIE ATTACK

For this page, I began with the pattern with the large random circles of various black and white patterns on the solid black base.  I trimmed a half inch off one side and the bottom, distressed the edges and then sewed it to a piece of cream coloured cardstock, using a couple of different stitches.

I covered a couple of the patterned circles on the background and added an extra one to bring in some orange, as this paper was originally black and white.

Then I layered up some fun patterns under myfocal point / photo and began embellishing.  Along with the stickers and flair from the kit, I added buttons and silver sparkly enamel dots from my stash.

HALLOWEEN HOME DCOR

The stickers in the kit screamed Halloween decor to me and since I have been wanting to do something like this for a while, now seemed like the perfect time!  I sent hubby on a while goose chase for some interesting looking bottles, and he found some great ones!  Homesense, 3 for $11.00 - gotta love that and the man!

After adhering the stickers to the front of the jars, I poured in water coloured with food colouring.

I used a couple of the little Tim Holtz skulls to top of 2 of the bottles.

The third, and largest bottle, had a metal loop on the top of it, which I tied a braided tassel to, created from bakers twine.

Then I adhered a skull to the bottom of the tassel.

I know that these fun jar will be a part of our Halloween decor for years to come.  I can simple dump out the water and refill again next year.

Supply List: My Mind's Eye patterned papers, stickers flair and alphas; American Crafts cardstock and buttons; Your Next Stamp enamel dots; Tim Holtz Distress Ink; Glimmerglaze; Tim Holtz Tiny Attacher; Doodlebug twine.

Thank you so much for visiting today!
