Family Ties | Laura's Monthly Reveal

Hi there!

Laura here with some layouts to share today for my latest ScrapMuch? DT reveal!

I was given some really great papers and a sticker sheet from the Family Ties collection by Photo Play,  I just love the colours in it! And it is such a great collection for documenting family connections.

And this super cool package of textured surfaces by Tim Holtz, which includes cork, burlap and corrugated cardboard that is all self adhesive.  Love that!

Plus these fun enamel shapes from Basic Grey in Navy and White!

And lastly, this package of fun wood veneer pennant shapes from Kaisercraft.  I just love their wood pieces!

I had fun creating three layouts, and pulled one accent colour from the patterned papers for each page, it was a great way to mix up the look of my layouts a bit while using the same products.  I also featured one type of the Tim Holtz textured surfaces on each page, so fun!

My Dad

This page was the first one that I created and I pulled out the orange as an accent colour, it is such a fresh colour and so perfect to pull us out of the winter blues.

I really liked several of the 3x4 cut apart cards on one of the patterned papers so I featured two on them on this page and centred my photo in between them, and layered the lot over a few patterned paper pieces.  I used a small heart stamp to "mark" the answers to the "This or That" questions on the cards.  So simple and fun!  As you can see I layered this card with a little coordinating sticker and added in some machine stitching for extra texture.  I am really loving that I gave my sewing machine a semi permanent space in my scrap room.

On this page I used a burlap texture sheet, and ran it through my Cuttlebug with a star shaped die.  FYI the burlap cut great and I love that it is adhesive backed and stuck great to my page, the staples are just for show ;)  I nestled in a few of the enamel shapes and a white button tied with twine from my stash, to pull in more of the orange colour.

My title "my DAD" is a mixture of alphas stickers from the sticker sheet and a banner piece fussy cut from one of the papers.

The tag was just quickly hand cut from one of the pretty patterns and adorned with a punched circle and more of the twine from my stash.

I added orange ink to the wood veneer pennant and I really love how it pops on my page.

The bottom of my page features a couple of strips of patterned papers, and another burlap star, button and enamel shape cluster.

I added in a bit of journaling, in white pen, reflecting on how similar my son's and husband's beginnings were (both joined their forever families through adoption) and how they were instantly ingrained in each others hearts when our son came home to us.

Brother

For my next page, I choose to document my three sons and their (silly) relationship and embraced the bright green colour form the collection as an accent.

For this page I used two 3x4 cards and one 4x6 card to accent my page, I really liked the text on them and the journaling prompt.  So I used a smaller photo but placed it on and angle to draw a little more attention to it.

I used the small alpha stickers on the sticker sheet to add in the characteristics of my boys as suggested on the 3x4 cut apart card.

This time around I used the cork from the textured surfaces pack, and used a circle punch to punch several circles to adorn my page.  The cork went through my punch like butter and is also adhesive backed.  FYI, I didn't have any trouble stitching through the cork either.

I dyed a pennant green using a green ink pad for this page.

I sprinkled the cork circles around my page, created several areas to embellish with stickers, stitching, enamel shapes along with buttons and twine from my stash.

This is Me

My last page is about me, something I am seeming to create once a year of so.  The "this is me" 3x4 cut apart card and the desire to feature some of the pinks in this collection prompted this page.  I used a craft knife to carefully cut around the arrow on the "this is me" 3x4 cut apart card so that I could pull it up on top of my photo to help me pull the elements a little closer together. I used the same heart shaped stamp that I used on my first page, this time with pink ink, to select my "This or That's".  I also pulled a small bit of pink American Crafts cardstock from my stash to mat my photo. Then I layered these elements onto some patterned paper, fussy cut around the circles in another paper and wrapped it all with some twine from my stash.

For this page I chose to use the corrugated cardboard from the textured surfaces by Tim Holtz, simply tearing it for a fun effect, again it went through my sewing machine really nicely.  I love the combination of girly pink and torn cardboard.

This typewriter was fussy cut from one of the patterns, I knew it needed to be as soon as I saw it, and clustered with some stickers, buttons and enamel shapes.

I also used the corrugated paper to free hand cut a heart, I always feel funny about adding hearts to my own pages, but I love the look of it in this little cluster!

Well that is is from me today, here is a detailed supply list for you in case you are looking for any of these goodies.

Inking Wood Veneer | Tutorial

Hi there!

Laura here with another one of my Wednesday tips for you!  I know I have shared a few different ways to add colour to wood veneer here in past, and even once before by using Distress Ink,  Well today's tip is similar but we will be using regular water based dye ink, that way those of you that do not have the alcohol based Distress Inks can play too!

So let's get started!

Gather your supplies, you will need any wood veneer shape, a dye ink of your choice and a water-brush (or a regular paint brush and a bit of water).

Start by rubbing your wood veneer piece on your ink pad to pick up as much colour as you can over the entire piece.

You will notice that due to the lack of smoothness on the surface of the wood veneer the ink doesn't absorb evenly.

This can be fixed with a few brush strokes of your water-brush.

It is just enough to smooth out the pigment from the ink over the surface of the wood veneer. You do not need to add much water at all really.

This has got to be one of the easiest and quickest ways to alter the colour of your wood veneers!  If you like a shiny finish why not top with a coat of Glossy Accents, for me I am sticking with a matte finish on this baby!

Have a great day!

Threading Embroidery Floss through Tiny Button Holes | Tutorial

Today I thought that I would share a quick tip about threading embroidery floss through tiny button holes.

I don't know about you but I really prefer the look of buttons that are threaded with embroidery floss or twine.

But some buttons are so tiny it is hard to get the floss through the holes and a needle is not an option.  Waxed dental floss is a great tool for threading these small button holes as it is smooth and slippery and ready easy to push through the tiny holes.

To start with thread the dental floss through one hole, from back to front.

And then back down the same hole, leaving a loop at the top of the button.

Now place a strand of embroidery floss inside the loop created by the dental floss.

And pull the dental floss gently through the hole.

Be care to leave one end of the embroidery floss at the front of the button.

There you have it, one button hole is complete, now you can just repeat these steps for the remaining holes.  Be sure to alternate the location of the dental floss look from front to back.

And then you can add a bow or knot!
